Young-Chang Cho

Young-Chang Cho (* 1958 in Seoul ) is a South Korean cellist and professor at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen.

Life

Young-Chang Cho was born in 1958 in the South Korean capital Seoul. He took piano lessons at the age of five and cello lessons at eight. At the age of 13 he began studies in the USA with David Soyer at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia . He later studied with Laurence Lesser at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and then in Europe with Siegfried Palm and Mstislaw Rostropowitsch .

In 1981 he was a prizewinner at the Concours de Violoncelle Rostropovitch in Paris, after which he was invited several times to act as a juror there. He has also received prizes at the Pablo Casals International Cello Competition in Budapest and the ARD International Music Competition in Munich.

With his sisters Young-Bang Cho (violin) and Young-Ba Cho (piano) he formed the Cho Piano Trio , which won prizes at the Concours de Genève in 1977 and at the ARD competition in 1980.

As a soloist with orchestra, he has performed with the Washington National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Rostropovitch and in Tokyo , Sofia and Bologna . He played at international music festivals such as the Kronberg Cello Festival , in 1993 in memory of Pablo Casals and in 1995 in memory of Emanuel Feuermann and Jacqueline du Pré . He was a juror at the first International Pablo Casals Cello Competition in 2000.

Young-Chang Cho has been a professor at the Folkwang University of Applied Sciences since 1987 (Folkwang University of the Arts since 2010) in the cello subject. His students include Saerom Park and Graham Waterhouse .
