history

The founding of Spar Österreichische Warenhandels-AG through the merger of all ten existing Spar wholesalers in 1970 was also the birth of Interspar GmbH as a sales subsidiary for large markets. After the first markets in Neu-Rum , Dornbirn and Graz, further locations were added in the 1970s. Within the first ten years, the number of Interspar hypermarkets grew to eleven locations.

In addition to taking over department stores in Vienna and Upper Austria, the first Interspar shopping centers were built in the 1980s. Within these ten years, the number of Interspar hypermarkets grew to 27 locations.

In the 1990s, various Interspar locations were expanded and converted, and the company experienced the strongest expansion in its history through acquisitions. Further Interspar shopping centers were built right across Austria. In 1999 the homepage www.interspar.at went online, a few years earlier (1995) electronic payment transactions became possible at Interspar - at that time an innovation in Austrian retail.

In 2000, Interspar started selling wine and spirits online. Since 2003 toys, kitchen items, household appliances and consumer electronics have also been sold online. In 2005 Interspar took over the Maximarkt trading houses with seven locations in Salzburg and Upper Austria.
