The village of Medenscheid is right on the edge of the Middle Rhine Valley and is the southernmost of the smaller districts of the city of Bacharach, two kilometers away .

location

Medenscheid is 240 m above sea level on the left plateau of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley at the eastern end of the Hunsrück . It is connected to the main town north on the banks of the Rhine by the district road 24 Bacharach– Manubach . The Medenscheid area is characterized by viticulture and agriculture. There are also numerous roses in the townscape, both on public and private areas. Medenscheid is therefore also known as Rosendorf. Two private gardens have been included in the route of the World Heritage Gardens of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley .

The place is particularly characterized by its village square, which is surrounded by the old school (used as a Protestant church from the 1960s to 2011) and the old bakery ( Backes ). In the middle of the village square there is a linden tree that is framed by a bench. Every two years the village square is also the center of the rose festival on Corpus Christi day.

history

The history of Medenscheid is closely connected to the city of Bacharach, since the place has belonged to the district and also administratively to the municipality since its creation. Medenscheid is first mentioned in a document from the Archbishop of Cologne, Friedrich I von Schwarzenburg, in 1104, to whose possession it belonged at that time.

Since 1140 Bacharach, and with it Medenscheid, was given to Count Hermann von Stahleck as a fief and subsequently became the property of the Count Palatine. Because of the dependence on his successors, the first council constitution was passed in Bacharach only in 1356. The inhabitants of Medenscheid had the same civil rights as citizens of the city of Bacharach, u. a. free wine tap, but in return also the same obligations as the contribution to the Bacharach city fortifications.

Medenscheid was one of the fourth valleys , whose inhabitants had special privileges with Bacharach as a suburb. The place also belonged to Bacharach in church. From 1541, the Wittelsbachers of the Electoral Palatinate reformed their quarter valleys around Bacharach on the Middle Rhine (communities in the Koblenz church district). Since then they have been predominantly Protestant.

The 17th century was a difficult time for Medenscheid. The place was devastated several times during the Thirty Years War , and several waves of plague brought hardship, poverty and misery to the residents.

After the end of feudal rule , the Viertäler belonged to the Mairie and Canton of Bacharach in the Département de Rhin-et-Moselle during the French period , then to Prussia , and became part of the Rhine province , district of Sankt Goar .

In the founding phase of the Federal Republic of Germany, the southern half of the Rhine Province, and thus also Medenscheid, part of the newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate , initially continued to belong to the St. Goar district. When it was dissolved on June 7, 1969, the region around Bacharach was added to the new Mainz-Bingen district.

The development of the rose village was strongly supported by the winemaker , distiller and home lover Rolf Heidrich, who died in 2017 . The Medenscheider Rosentag has existed since 2009 and now takes place every two years. The sixth edition of the Rose Festival was celebrated on June 3, 2018.

Surname

Over the centuries the place name varied several times - there are: 1358 Medemescheit; 1361 Medemscheit; 1383 media log; 1435 from Medemscheid; 1669/78 Medenschitt; 1693 Meddiffer. Etymologically, the place name is derived from Middle High German mêdeme = ground interest, mortgage and -scheid = wooded ridge.

economy

Besides agriculture and viticulture , tourism is important today.

politics

Medenscheid is designated as a local district and therefore has a local advisory board and a local mayor . The local council consists of five local council members who were elected in the local elections on May 26, 2019 . The mayor, Norbert Wagner, was elected by the local council.

leisure

Medenscheid is located directly on the Rheingoldstrasse, which runs over the left Rhine heights . The Rheinburgenweg , which runs almost around the entire village and opens up some views of the city of Bacharach and the Rhine, is ideal for hikers .
