Ioannis Alexiou ( Greek Γιάννης Αλεξίου ; born December 8, 1984 in Drama ) is a Greek football player .

biography

The defender had his first professional appearances at Veria FC when the club first appeared in the second-rate Beta Ethniki in the 2006/07 season . The team was promoted to the Super League , the first division in Greece. Alexiou played in 21 first division games, but the club was relegated straight back to the second division. Alexiou played another season at Veria, in 2009 he switched to the then first division club APO Levadiakos , for whom he played a total of 41 times in the first and, after relegation, second division until 2012. He then moved to Germany for the then fifth-class KFC Uerdingen 05 .

This change came about because Alexiou's son suffered from kidney and liver disease and he wanted to offer him the best possible treatment in the Essen University Hospital near Krefeld . For the decision to give up his professional career in favor of his family, Alexiou received an honorary award at the Greek sports awards "Super League Award" in 2016. Alexiou stayed with KFC Uerdingen until the end of the 2015/16 season and was promoted to and relegated to the Regionalliga West with him . In his last of over a hundred games for the club, he was thrown off the pitch early with a red card. Then he joined the upper division TV Jahn Hiesfeld , for whom he was active for two and a half years. During the winter break of the 2018/19 season, he finally switched to the regional league club DJK Teutonia St. Tönis .
