Ion Gheorghe Ionescu (born April 5, 1938 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian football player and coach . He played a total of 233 games in the Romanian Divizia A , the German Bundesliga and the Belgian Eerste Class . He also took part in the 1964 Olympic Games .
Career as a player
Ion Ionescu began playing football at the age of ten in his hometown of Bucharest with Locomotiva (later Rapid Bucharest). After playing for local rivals TAROM and Știința in the late 1950s , he returned to Rapid in 1960, which was one of the best Romanian clubs in the 1960s. In addition to the championship in 1967 - the first championship in the club's history - he was able to celebrate two cup wins in 1963 and 1966 .
In the summer of 1968 Ionescu got the opportunity to move to Germany and joined Alemannia Aachen , which was playing in the Bundesliga at the time . In the two years that he played for Alemannia, he played 46 games and scored ten goals. In the 1968/69 season he helped to achieve the greatest success in the Aachen club's history - the runner-up behind FC Bayern Munich . In the following season , however, the crash followed and Alemannia was relegated from the Bundesliga.
After the end of the season Ionescu returned to Romania and played briefly for Crișul Oradea , but could not avoid relegation here either. Ionescu moved again abroad to the Belgian tweede class at Cercle Bruges . After being promoted to first class , he was hardly ever used there and ended his career in 1972.
National team
Ion Ionescu appeared in 24 games for the Romanian national team and scored five goals. His debut was against Morocco on December 23, 1962 . In 1964 he was in the squad for the soccer tournament of the Olympic Games in Tokyo and was used in the games against Iran , Mexico and Hungary , where he was able to score a goal against Mexico.
Career as a coach
In the 1980/81 season was Ionescu head coach of Gloria Buzau in the Divizia A . In the 1980/81 season in charge Ionescu his old club Rapid Bucharest in Divizia B .
