Ira Schulman
Ira G. Schulman (born December 1, 1926 in Chicago , Illinois ; † July 20, 2008 ) was an American jazz musician ( clarinet , flute , tenor saxophone ) and music teacher.
Live and act
As a teenager, Schulman began to play on a clarinet, which he received as a gift at Bar Mitzwah . He began performing in Chicago jazz in the late 1940s, working with musicians such as Cy Touff , Hal Russell , Bill Russo , Joe Daley , Kenny Mann , Eddie Baker , Jimmy Gourley and Ira Sullivan during this period . In 1958 he moved with his family to Los Angeles , where he worked as a session musician in the Warner Bros. studios ; he worked on television productions with Bob Crosby , Onzy Mathews and Gerald Wilson . He also played in the big bands of Woody Herman , Charlie Spivak and Boyd Raeburn .
He later went on tour as a member of the Don Ellis Jazz Band and participated in its recordings for Pacific Jazz and Columbia ; he also recorded with Dave MacKay for Impulse ( Rainbows ). In the 1970s Schulman formed two of his own formations, the Baroque / Jazz Ensemble and the band Four Winds , with whom he introduced jazz history to schoolchildren and students and appeared in programs of the Young Audiences Foundation , Performing Tree and the Inner City Cultural Awareness Program . In 1998, Ira Schulman was awarded the Professional Artists in Schools Award for his music education work . With another ensemble he founded called The Storytellers , he combined music, dance and literature and performed in schools in the Los Angeles area. He also worked as a private tutor for flute, clarinet and saxophone.
