The Iranische Bibliothek in Hannover eV is a socio-cultural center and library that specializes in the collection of so-called gray literature in Persian from and about Iran . The seat of the non-profit association has been Vordere Schöneworth 17 (rear building) in the Hanover district of Nordstadt since the end of 2012 .

The library contains works in prose and poetry, literature, history and science, literature from various groups and on human rights violations in Iran. The collection also includes literary works prohibited in Iran. The books are mainly written in Persian, but literature on Iran in other languages as well as films and documentaries on Iran are also collected. Since it is difficult for Iranians in exile to get hold of Persian-language literature, the library is of particular importance in terms of maintaining contacts.

history

The Iranian Library was founded in 1983 by exiled Iranians. Since 1985 it has been based in the Hanover garden house opposite the Old Jewish Cemetery on Oberstrasse . From 2010 the library was temporarily housed at Tulpenstrasse 15 until it moved to Vordere Schöneworth 17 in 2012.

The library is the smaller of two libraries in Hanover that specialize in the Persian-speaking area, its bigger sister is the Iranian Documentation Center and Library near Kargah, founded in 1993 on the FAUST site in the Linden-Nord district . The joint holdings of both libraries are “one of the largest collections of Persian-language literature in Europe”.
