Irem M-62

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Irem M-62 is the name of a slot machine system that has been developed for several arcade games .

The manufacturer Irem named its slot machine systems with numbers. It started with the M-10 from 1979, of which little is known. Most of the time, the steps were done in steps of 10. The last system was the M-107 manufactured in 1994. M-62 was developed in 1984 around the computer game Kung-Fu Master , the first horizontal beat 'em up .

Games

The following games use (almost) the same hardware:

  • Kung-Fu Master / Spartan-X (Japanese) ( 1984 )
  • The Battle Road (1984)
  • Lode Runner (licensed by Brøderbund ) (1984)
  • Lode Runner II - The Bungeling Strikes Back (licensed by Brøderbund) (1984)
  • Horizon (1985)
  • Lode Runner III - The Golden Labyrinth (licensed by Brøderbund) (1985)
  • Lot Lot (1985)
  • Spelunker (licensed by Brøderbund) (1985)
  • Kid Niki - Radical Ninja / Kaiketsu Yanchamaru (1986) (with analog drums)
  • Lode Runner IV - Teikoku Kara no Dasshutsu (1986)
  • Spelunker II (licensed by Brøderbund) (1986)
  • Youjyuden (1986)

Hardware details

CPU

The system consists of three boards on top of each other : On the main board is the Zilog Z80 processor ( the arcade CPU). It is compatible with the i8080 from Intel , but cheaper. A Motorola M6803 is used as the second CPU , which is responsible for sound and input control (4-way joystick and 2 buttons). The Z80 is clocked with 3.072 MHz and the M6803 with 894.86 kHz.

Sound

The sound system consists of two AY-3-8910 ( General Instrument , partly also the compatible Yamaha YM2149) for music (had most of the arcade games) and two MSM5205 ( Oki ) (almost only used by Irem) for the sounds / speech. The overall sound output is mono. The music output is good for the conditions at the time (6 voices). The voice output is a bit tinny (especially the laughter of the boss opponents), but it does justice to the Kung-Fu game. Kid Niki and Horizon have an analog circuit for the drum sounds. The analog emulation in MAME via netlist began in June 2015 (from version 0.163).

The MSM5205 has an internal 12-bit decoding circuit with values from 0 to 8191. The data is in ADPCM format (.vox). The sample rate is only 4000 Hz .

graphic

The graphics resolution is normally 256 × 256 pixels with an aspect ratio of 4: 3, but these and other functions can be changed using jumpers . In the basic version (Kung-Fu Master) there are 512 different colors. Further information: 55 fps , line jump every 17.90 ms.

Screenshots of the MAME emulator are, as before, incorrectly saved as a square; however, the emulation can be stretched to the correct aspect ratio.

Dimensions

The size of the board is 23 × 28 cm plus internal plug connections (the circuit boards are connected to each other on the side by cable plugs) and external connections such as B. a JAMMA adapter. The total height (thickness) is about 6 cm (including components and fixings).

Circuit boards

The three boards have special names. However, they are slightly different depending on the game. Larger memory chips and sometimes other processors were also used later. There were also imitation boards, so-called bootlegs .

  • Lower board (bottom board, board B or BC) mostly for the numerous graphic ROMs (figure graphics), 8 KB each
  • Middle board (connection board, board A) AB, AC or AE with processors, program and sound ROMs
  • Upper, smaller board VA, EA or AB (rest of the graphic ROMs) Kung-Fu Master: G-Board

There are also numerous logic modules on the boards.
