Mary Irene Curzon, 2nd Baroness Ravensdale , CBE (born January 20, 1896 in London , † February 9, 1966 ibid) was a British noblewoman and a member of the House of Lords .

Life

Mary Irene was the eldest daughter of three children of the British politician and later Viceroy of India George Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston (1859-1925) and his first wife, the American Mary Victoria Head (1870-1906). She attended the renowned Swiss boarding school Le Rosey . Lady Irene was a member of the circle of friends of the Prince of Wales and later King Edward VIII . She was already considered Edward's future wife until Wallis Simpson won his favor and he renounced the British throne because of her (1936). She had several affairs , including with her brother-in-law Sir Oswald Mosley and the Polish pianist Artur Rubinstein . She rejected the marriage proposals of the politician Victor Alexander Cazalet and the later ambassador to Germany , Sir Nevile Meyrick Henderson .

Lady Irene was involved in social areas all her life. During the Second World War , she organized the care of wounded soldiers, deportations to children’s land and lectures. For their work at the children's aid organization Save the Children , she and her younger sister Alexandra Naldera were welcomed by King George VI. appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE). In 1925 she had inherited the title of Baroness Ravensdale from her father on the basis of a special note when she was awarded . She was also named a Life Peer on October 6, 1958 as Baroness Ravensdale of Kedleston . This gave her a seat in the House of Lords , which was only possible for the bearers of hereditary titles from the Peerage Act 1963 .
