Irene Krause
Irene Krause (married Irene Salomon) (born February 12, 1940 , † August 8, 2008 ) was a German basketball player .
Life
Krause won the bronze medal at the European Championship with the women's national team of the German Democratic Republic in 1966. At that time, the GDR selection, along with the USSR and Czechoslovakia, were among the best national teams in the world. During the European Championship '66, Krause was the second best German scorer behind Renate Ameis with 11.1 points per game .
In 1964 she reached sixth place with the GDR selection at the EM, at the European championship tournaments in 1967 and 1968 Krause and the team won fourth place. At the '67 World Cup and the '68 European Championship, she led the GDR women with an average of 13.9 per game and 12.3 per game. In total, the Berliner, who played for TSC Berlin, played 76 international matches for the GDR.
Krause worked in East Berlin on the City Council for Youth and Sport and was Deputy Chairwoman of the Berlin District Board of the German Gymnastics and Sports Association (DTSB). She dealt with aspects of basketball history as part of her history studies and in part also in her later position as director of the Sports Museum Berlin until 1991. In 1965 she presented the work “The Development of the Basketball Game in Germany” and in 1990 “Milestones in the Development of Basketball in the GDR”. She also published articles in the journal "Contributions to Sports History".
