biography

Irene Sáez was elected Miss Universe on July 21, 1981 in New York City , making it the second Venezuelan winner of this beauty pageant after Maritza Sayalero in 1979. She was previously Miss Miranda and Miss Venezuela.

She began her political career in 1992 when she first became mayor of Chacao , one of the upper-class residential areas of Caracas in the state of Miranda . During her term of office, she reduced crime , corruption and bureaucracy and was re-elected for a second term until 1998 with 96 percent of the votes.

On this basis and because of the increasing public dissatisfaction with the traditional parties, she became one of the first independent candidates for the presidential election in 1998. She was ultimately the most popular political figure at the beginning of the election campaign, but later fell back in favor of the electorate after she accepted support from the Comité de Organización Política Electoral Independiente (COPEI), the country's second largest party at the time. In the last week of the election campaign, COPEI refused to support it and instead nominated Henrique Salas as its official presidential candidate. However, Sáez remained an independent candidate and received support because of her strong convictions and great reputation. On the other hand, critics accused her of being a political lightweight, who was not up to quick-witted interviewers and was more concerned with her image than with politics. Ultimately, after the election winner and current president , she achieved a beaten third place in the elections on December 6, 1998.

In March 1999, she made a surprising political comeback when she became governor of the state of Nueva Esparta as a candidate for a multi-party electoral alliance , after winning 70 to 28.91 percent of the vote in the state against her closest rival, businessman and car dealer Gregorio Boadas Runoff election struck. After new elections were planned for July 2000 by the new Bolivarian Constitution , she announced that she would not run for governor again because of her pregnancy .
