Irmela Hammelstein

Irmela Hammelstein (born January 27, 1942 in Elbing / West Prussia, † May 24, 1995 in Wolfsburg ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Hammelstein attended both elementary school and middle school in Helmstedt . She then went to a women's college in Braunschweig and began training and later employment as an electrical consultant since 1961 in Düsseldorf , Essen and Bad Godesberg for various companies in the energy supply industry. She began studying in Hanover and Braunschweig. Here she passed the exam for teaching at elementary and secondary schools in 1975 and also for teaching at secondary schools in 1981. Hammelstein was employed as a teacher in Wolfsburg between 1966 and 1986. In 1976 she was accepted into the civil service.

She had been a member of the Education and Science Union since 1966, followed by joining the SPD in 1971. Hammerstein became a member of the SPD sub-district committee in Wolfsburg and the SPD district committee in Braunschweig. In Wolfsburg she also became a member of the supervisory board of the vocational training center. Between 1974 and 1986 she was a member of the local council of the Wolfsburg district of Vorsfelde . In 1981 Hammelstein became a councilor in the Wolfsburg City Council . She was also a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament for the eleventh and twelfth electoral periods between June 21, 1986 and June 20, 1994. During this time she was deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group from June 12, 1990 to June 20, 1994.

In November 2019 , a street (Irmela-Hammelstein-Straße) was named after her in the “An der Gärtnerei” building area in Ehmen , a district of Wolfsburg.
