Irmgard Sörensen-Popitz (born June 3, 1896 in Kiel , died November 2, 1993 in Kronberg im Taunus) was a German designer and artist .

Irmgard Sörensen-Popitz was born in Kiel and attended the crafts and applied arts school there before studying at the State Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Industry in Leipzig from 1917 . In addition to Hugo Steiner-Prag , her teachers also included Jan Tschichold , a protagonist of New Typography . In 1920 the designer won a poster competition for the Academy's Second Advertising Art Exhibition and attracted attention with her modern image concept.

A defining event for her (according to her own statement) turned out to be the visit to the “ Bauhaus Exhibition ” in 1923, where she was particularly enthusiastic about the typographic work of the Bauhaus print shop under László Moholy-Nagy . “Since I wanted to meet like-minded people, I went to the Bauhaus in Weimar.” In 1924/25, “Söre” - as she was called - studied for two semesters at the Bauhaus , a. a. at Wassily Kandinsky , Paul Klee and Moholy-Nagy, and there she also met Herbert Bayer , with whom she later worked in her position as art director of the modern lifestyle magazines, the new line at Beyer-Verlag.
