Iron & Wine

Sam Beam (2008)

Iron & Wine is the name under which the American singer-songwriter Sam Beam (born July 26, 1974 ) appears and publishes. Beam borrowed the name Iron & Wine from a dietary supplement called “Beef Iron & Wine”, which he discovered while filming in a shop.

history

Beam grew up near Columbia , South Carolina and graduated from Florida State University with a degree in film studies , but now lives in Dripping Springs , near Austin , Texas. Before he found success with his music, he taught film and cinematography at the University of Miami . He had long been writing songs when a friend lent him a four-track recorder. One of his demos drew the attention of Jonathan Poneman, the record manager of Sub Pop , to him, who promptly offered him a record deal.

In 2002 Beam released his first album, The Creek Drank the Cradle , whose pieces he recorded alone at home. Further own recordings appeared in 2003 on the EP The Sea & the Rhythm . His second studio album, Our Endless Numbered Days (2004), however, was recorded with guest musicians in a professional recording studio. This was followed by the EP Woman King in February 2005 and the EP In the Reins in September 2005 , a collaboration with Calexico , with which Beam also went on tour. On the third album The Shepherd's Dog , Joey Burns and Paul Niehaus from Calexico appeared as guests, as did jazz musicians Matt Lux and Rob Burger .

Probably the best-known track by Iron & Wine, however, is a cover version that became popular through its use in a commercial and in the film Garden State : Such Great Heights , originally by The Postal Service .
