Entrance maze

The maze in Altjeßnitz ( Anhalt-Bitterfeld district ) is a baroque hedge maze .

It is located in the park that used to belong to the Altjeßnitz Castle . This was built in 1699. A fire in 1946 destroyed large parts of the palace. Demolition work followed in April 1975. Parts were rebuilt, but clearly changed.

The maze, which was laid out in the middle of the 18th century by order of Leopold Nicolas Freiherr von Ende, with an almost square floor plan, is the largest among the few preserved historical hedge mazes in Germany with an area of around 2600 m². There are contradicting sources about the exact date of its creation. Despite some changes, it has retained its original character. The hedges consist of hornbeams two meters high . There is an entrance that is also an exit and is adorned by a statue of Ceres , the Roman goddess of agriculture and forage, and a wooden viewing platform in the middle from which the entire maze can be viewed. The original design of the maze can be found in the garden regulations of the Thuringian pastor Johann Peschel .

Although the shortest route to the center is only around 400 m, getting to the center is a challenging task. The artful network of paths has no dead ends. There are around 250 different ways of achieving the goal; the total length of all paths is 1230 m. The maze is a listed building and was last restored in 2005.
