The Irvine Spectrum Center is an open-air shopping center in Irvine in the US state of California . Its structure can be compared to that of a pedestrian zone . The mall is operated by the Irvine Company , a private company that designed and built the entire city of Irvine. In addition to around 130 different shops, there is a cinema with 21 film halls in the north of the center, some of which support the new IMAX system.

The shopping center serves as a backdrop for the opening scene of the US youth - sitcom Austin & Ally .

history

As the name suggests, the Irvine Spectrum Center is supposed to be the center of the Irvine Spectrum district . Already in 1985 the corresponding plans began to develop this quarter into an attractive place by creating shops, offices and residential areas in equal measure. After the first office buildings opened just four years later, construction work began in 1993 on The Entertainment Center at Irvine Spectrum (Section 1). In 1995 the construction project was finished and officially opened. Shops, restaurants and the largest cinema in the United States to date were created on over 23,000 m² . In 1998 the second section opened, adding another 23,000 m² to the area. The third section opened in 2002 and enlarged the shopping center by a further 31,000 m². In the same year, today's landmark of the Irvine Spectrum Center was built: a 33 meter high Ferris wheel .

In 2016 the local branch of the Macy’s department store was closed. After the building was demolished, 30 new shops were created on the site, which are due to open in 2018. The Irvine Company is investing around 200 million US dollars in this. A new multi-storey car park is also to be opened at the end of 2018, which will create over 1,500 new parking spaces.

layout

The architecture of the site is largely based on the Spanish city castle Alhambra . This influence was particularly evident in the center's second expansion phase.

In the northern part of the site there is an obelisk over 30 meters in size , which advertises the center. It is decorated accordingly on special occasions and holidays. The obelisk covers a radio tower that is located in it.

In addition to shops and restaurants, the Spectrum Center also has a 33 meter high Ferris wheel and a carousel .

In 2015, a 15-meter-high weeping fig , which stood on the premises of the headquarters of the parent company, was moved into the center. This should create a new place (plaza). Several LED light strips embedded in the ground surround the tree. These light strips simulate a clock and thus always show the current time.
