Isaac Roosevelt

Isaac Roosevelt (born December 19, 1726 in New York City , † October 1794 ) was a British-American merchant and politician ( Federalist Party ). He was the great-great-grandfather of the future US President Franklin D. Roosevelt .

Career

Roosevelt was born in New York City in 1726 and then baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of New York . He was one of the first large-scale sugar refinery entrepreneurs in New York City. Roosevelt built one of his first sugar refineries in town and his business was originally on Wall Street but was later moved to St. George's Square .

"Isaac Roosevelt is removed from his house in Wall Street to the house of his late brother, Jacobus Roosevelt, Jr, deceased, near the Sugar house, and opposite to Mr. William Waltons, being on the northwest side of Queen Street, where his customers may be supplied as usual with double, middling and single refined loaf sugars, clarified, muscovado and other molasses, & etc. " - April 25, 1772

Roosevelt was active in the community. He was one of the earliest members of the New York City Chamber of Commerce , established in 1768. Then he was one of the founders of the first public hospital in New York in 1770 and a co-founder of the Bank of New York in 1784 . He was the second president of the bank, a post he held between 1786 and 1791.

He chose a political career when he was elected to the New York Provincial Congress on April 22, 1775. He was also a member of the Committee of One Hundred that took control of the state government in May 1775. Although he showed no loyalty to England , he was initially temperate, hoping to prevent conflict. When the British occupied New York City, he withdrew from the city and spent the occupation period at his wife's parents' house in Dutchess County . During this time he served in the 6th Regiment of the Dutchess County Militia .

Roosevelt served in the New York Senate from 1777 to 1786 and again from 1788 to 1792 . During this time he took part on June 18, 1788 at the New York State Convention , where it was about the adoption of the American Declaration of Independence . He was one of ten MPs from New York City. Other well-known MPs included John Jay , Alexander Hamilton and Robert R. Livingston . He was also a member of a committee that was allowed to decide on several formal errors in the gubernatorial election of 1792 . The decision was made in favor of George Clinton .

Isaac Roosevelt was the son of Jacobus Roosevelt , grandson of Nicholas Roosevelt and great-grandson of the immigrant Claes Martenzsen Van Rosenvelt. He married Cornelia Hoffman on September 22, 1752, daughter of an important landowner from Dutchess County. The couple had ten children together, including Jacobus (James), great-grandfather of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
