Isaac in America: A Journey with Isaac Bashevis Singer is an American documentary from 1986. Directed by Amram Nowak . The film deals with the life and work of the Nobel Prize winner Isaac Bashevis Singer (1902–1991). Isaac in America premiered on September 28, 1986 at the New York Film Festival .

The writer Isaac Bashevis Singer talks about his childhood in Warsaw , his youth on Coney Island , his career and other memorable things from his life. He visits places and people who have influenced his work. Singer shows his first residence after immigration in the 1930s and takes the camera with him to the newspaper office, where his career began. The actor Judd Hirsch and Singer read from Singer's works, for example from the short story A Day at Coney Island . The author also allows a look into his apartment on the Upper West Side and into his office, which is so full of books that there is hardly any space to walk.

Nominations

Isaac in America: A Journey with Isaac Bashevis Singer was nominated for the 1987 Academy Award for “Best Documentary”, but could not win the award. At the 1987 Sundance Film Festival , the film was also left empty-handed in the documentary category.

Reviews

The New York Times ruled in September 1986 that the film was a "warm, anecdotal portrait".
