Before the October Revolution , Brodski was one of the members of the Jewish Society for the Advancement of the Arts founded by Natan Issajewitsch Altman (Еврейского общества поощрения художеств) and had some success as a painter, including a portrait of Alexander Kerensyodorov .
In 1922 he was one of the founders of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia and was one of the main exponents of Socialist Realism . His best-known picture is undoubtedly VI Lenin in Smolny (1930), a posthumous, almost naturalistic representation of Lenin . In doing so, Brodski did not strive for idealization or heroization, as was customary until then, but a human representation of the revolutionary leader. Another well-known picture dates from 1933 and bears the title Lenin speaks to Moscow workers on May 5, 1920 . It refers to a photo of the event created by Grigory Petrovich Goldstein , but does not show Trotsky and Kamenev, who later fell out of favor and retouched in the photos .
Brodski was the first artist to be awarded the Order of Lenin .
