Isala kungslada, the "royal barn"

Isala is a hamlet north of Svärdsjö in the Swedish province of Dalarna . The place is known for the fact that the future King of Sweden Gustav Wasa is said to have hidden there in a barn from Danish troops.

Isala and Gustav Wasa

According to legend, Gustav Vasa is said to have hid with a farmer in Isala in the winter of 1520 . The farmer's wife, who, depending on the source, is called Sven Alfson, Sven Elfsson, Sven Nilsson or Sven Algotsson, is said to have saved Gustav Vasa on one occasion by thrashing him with a bread shovel to dispel suspicions among Danish scouts that Gustav Vasa, dressed as a servant, could be that person. Later, the aforementioned Sven is said to have brought Gustav Vasa, hidden in the straw, with his car.

The story found its way into Swedish history books in the 17th century. There is no evidence of their accuracy. However, there is evidence that Gustav Wasa used a man by the name of Sven as a messenger in Isala in 1524 .

The famous Isala barn, also known as the “royal barn” (kungsladan), is a threshing floor owned by the state property management company Statens fastighetsverk . It was dated to after 1483 using dendrochronology .
