Ischchan Tschiftdschjan ( Armenian Իշխան , * 1974 in Beirut , Lebanon ) is a Lebanese Protestant theologian of Armenian descent in Germany . He is currently a lecturer in Armenian at the University of Hamburg .

Life

Ischchan Tschiftjjan's grandparents came from Sis near Adana in southern Anatolia and only survived the Armenian genocide because the great-grandfather served in the Ottoman army . But they were forced to give up their homeland in Turkey, had to move to Lebanon and thus became part of the Armenian diaspora .

Ischchan Tschiftdschjan has lived in Leipzig since 1999 , where he studied Protestant theology. He explained that his new adopted home, East Germany, was “not a coincidence” as there are many historical references for the Armenians here. He referred to the Armenian Academic Association, which was active in Leipzig, Jena and Berlin at the end of the 19th century . In addition, the first Armenian book in Germany was written here, which was printed in Leipzig in 1680 in the Armenian language and in Latin : O Tschiftdschjan.

In 2010 he made a trip to Turkey to follow in the footsteps of his grandparents' ordeal in the course of the Armenian genocide.

He is a member of the Central Council of Armenians in Germany .

Positions

Ischchan Chiftjjan explains that only Iran and Russia are Armenia's allies, as all other neighboring countries (especially Turkey and Azerbaijan ) are hostile to the small Republic of Armenia, with less than three million inhabitants. Tschiftjjan estimates the number of Armenians living in Germany at 50,000 to 60,000.

Ischchan Chiftjjan demands that Turkey recognize the genocide of the Armenians.
