Ishmael Noko

Ishmael Noko (born October 29, 1943 in Southern Rhodesia ) is a Zimbabwean Lutheran theologian. He was the general secretary of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) from 1994 to 2010 .

Life

Noko studied theology at the University of South Africa in Pretoria and at the University of Zululand . He was ordained in 1972 and continued his studies in Canada at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan , where he obtained a master's degree in 1974 . In 1977 he received his PhD from McGill University in Montreal . From 1977 Noko taught theology at the University of Botswana before moving to the Lutheran World Federation in 1982, where he took over the department for refugee issues in the Department of World Service. He took over the department for church cooperation in 1987. In 1990 he became head of the department for mission and development.

In June 1994, Noko was the first African to be elected General Secretary of the Lutheran World Federation. He was confirmed in office in 1997 and 2004. In 1999 he was involved in the signing of the joint declaration on the doctrine of justification between the Roman Catholic Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Churches in Augsburg . On October 31, 2010, Noko ended his work as general secretary and handed over the office to the newly elected Lutheran pastor Martin Junge , who came from Chile .
