Martin Junge was born the third of five children to an Austrian mother and a Chilean father. After studying theology at the University of Göttingen and completing a visiting vicariate in Hanover , he was ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile (Iglesia Evangélica Luterana en Chile - IELCH) in 1989 .

From 1989 to 2000 Junge worked as a pastor in parishes in Santiago de Chile and from 1996 to 2000 he was President of the IELCH.

Since 2000, Junge has been an area officer for Latin America and the Caribbean in the Department for Mission and Development of the Lutheran World Federation . Since 2008 he has also been completing a diploma course in “Association / NPO Management” at the Association Management Institute (VMI) at the University of Friborg in Switzerland .

The Council of the Lutheran World Federation elected Young LWF General Secretary at its October 2009 meeting in Chavannes-de-Bogis, near Geneva, to succeed the Zimbabwean theologian Ishmael Noko . The handover took place on November 1, 2010. At its meeting in June 2016 in Wittenberg , the LWF Council unanimously extended the mandate for a second seven-year term. In May 2020, Junge announced that he would be stepping down on October 31, 2021, three years before the regular end of his term of office.

On October 20, 2017, Junge was awarded the Augsburger Friedensfest 2017 ( Augsburg Peace Prize ) in Augsburg . The laudator César García , Secretary General of the Mennonite World Conference , praised the boy as someone who “does not keep a distance, but calls for reconciliation”. His tireless work for reconciliation between the denominations and for the pursuit of justice and peace deserves this recognition, said García.

Martin Junge has been married since 1987 and has two sons.
