Head of the Treasury

Isi (also Izi ) was an ancient Egyptian " treasurer " in the 4th Dynasty and thus one of the highest palace officials of his time. Isi is known from eleven blocks of his grave, which are now in Copenhagen ( Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek ), Cairo and above all Moscow ( Pushkin Museum ). His grave, which was probably located in Saqqara, was found during illegal excavations around 1890. The blocks came to the museums mentioned in the following years, with Moscow receiving eight blocks, Copenhagen three and Cairo only one. A certain Nefretwennes with the title “ King's Known ” ( Rḫ.t-nsw = right-nesu), who was probably Isi's wife, appears on these blocks . Two other people are Nikauhor (likely a son) and Hetepnub (likely a daughter).

The most important title of the Izi was " Treasurer ". His other titles were:

  • " Head of the great domain " ( Jmj-r3-ḥwt-ˁ3t = Imi-ra-hut-aat)
  • " Groß an Bezet " ( Wr-bst = Wer-beset)
  • " Head of the royal jewelry " ( Jmj-r3-ẖkrt-nsw = Imi-ra-chekeret-nesu)
  • " Head of the Gaue of Upper Egypt " ( Sšmw-sp3wt = Seschemu-sepaut)
  • " Head of the team house " ( Jmj-r3-gs-pr = Imi-ra-ges-per)
  • " Writer of the royal charter " ( Sš-ˁ-nsw = Sesch-a-nesu)
  • " Bearer of secrets " ( Ḥri-sšt3 = Heri-sescheta)
  • " Head in the northern districts " ( Sws3-sp3wt-mḥwt = Swescha-sepaut-mechut)

The dating of Isi is uncertain. There is no king name on the blocks. Above all, the scene on his false door , which shows a linen list, is more typical of the early or middle 4th dynasty.
