Isidoro La Lumia (born November 1, 1823 in Palermo , † August 28, 1879 there ) was an Italian politician and historian .

Life

La Lumia studied law and was admitted to the bar after successfully completing his studies. Even during his studies, La Lumia dealt with the history of his homeland Sicily . In 1844 he made his debut with his draft of a story of his homeland, I Luna ei Perollo .

Politically engaged, La Lumia became a supporter of Giuseppe Garibaldi early on and also took part in the uprising against the Bourbons in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies . Together with Bonaccorsi, La Lumia wrote a memorandum on the political rights of Sicily , which the publisher Franck published in Paris at the beginning of 1849. During the Italian Wars of Independence , La Lumia joined Garibaldi's platoon of a thousand in 1860 and published his pamphlet La restaurazione borbonica e la rivoluzione del 1860 in Sicilia .

In 1864 La Lumia was promoted to director of the State Archives in Palermo; an office that he held until the end of his life.

reception

His numerous monographs on Sicilian history, which described the conditions on the island in the 12th century (including the diversity of peoples, the flourishing of a common language and culture) very vividly and on the basis of learned studies, were partly reissued in the 20th century . The collection of Sicilian documents he began was also trend-setting.
