Riesco ( Spanish Isla Riesco ) is a large island in southern Chile . Administratively, the island belongs to the municipality of Río Verde in the Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena . It is named after the Chilean President Germán Riesco .

geography

Riesco lies west of the Brunswick Peninsula , from which it is separated by Seno Otway Bay . In the northeast, the Fitz Roy Canal , which is only a few hundred meters wide, separates the island from the Patagonian mainland; in the southwest, the Strait of Magellan , which is around 2 km wide, forms the border with the islands of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, especially the island of Santa Inés . And in the north-west it is only separated from the Muñoz-Gamero Peninsula by a very narrow strait , with which it was even considered contiguous until 1904. Riesco is about 120 km long, up to 75 km wide and has an area of 5,110 km², which makes it the fourth largest island in Chile. Riesco is jagged by numerous bays and fjords and in the Cerro Ladrillero it reaches an altitude of 1702 m above sea level.
