The Isla del Ciervo (deer island) is an island in the middle of the Mar Menor , in the area of the municipality of Cartagena in the region of Murcia . It is only 100 meters from La Manga del Mar Menor and consists of two volcanic cones of the Volcanes del Campo de Cartagena . Due to its proximity to the Manga spit , it is easily accessible on foot.

Surname

Originally the island was called "Isla del Siervo" (Isle of the Servant) because the Barón de Benifayo had given it to one of his servants. Only in the course of the mapping was the name changed to its current form.

geography

The deer island belonged together with the Isla del Sujeto , the Isla Rondella O Redonda , as well as the Cerro Calnegre and the Monte Blanco on the Manga to a former hotspot . It was formed about 7 million years ago in the Miocene . The three mentioned islands form the Cala del Pino of the Mar Menor. The Gola de Marchamalo extends to the south . The Isla del Ciervo itself is divided into a narrow eastern part and a broad, fan-like western part, so that it has the shape of an ax head. The structure follows the shape of the two volcanic cones. They rise up to about 45 m above sea level , with the eastern part of the island being lower. Until a few years ago, there was a road from Playa Sol Galua on which you could get to the island without getting your feet wet . However, this was removed to restore the island's position and to protect the island's valuable biotopes. The island has an approx. 100 m long beach, which is especially popular with kite surfers .

natural reserve

Since 1992 the island has been part of the protected area of the Espacios abiertos e islas del Mar Menor and is designated as a nature park and Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves .

The island is botanically interesting because some Ibero-African species have survived , including the oval ( Withania frutescens ) , the tree loop Periploca angustifolia (Cornical in Spanish) and Chumberillo de Lobo ( Apteranthes europaea ). There is also a large population of dwarf palms (palmitos, Chamaerops humilis ). These plant communities have contributed to the classification of the island as a Microrreserva botánica .
