The Islamic University of Medina ( Arabic الجامعة الإسلامية بالمدينة المنورة, DMG al-Ǧāmiʿa al-Islāmīya bi-l-Madīna al-Munauwara ; English Islamic University of al-Madinah al-Munawarah ) is an Islamic educational institution in Saudi Arabia . It was founded by a decree of King Saud ibn Abd al-Aziz in 1961 ( 1381 AH ) in Medina , the holy city of Islam . It is not far from the Prophet's Mosque . In 2000 it had about 3,000 students.

The university is regarded as the "mission center of the Wahhabiya", i. H. the conservative and dogmatic movement of the Wahhabis of Sunni Islam of the Hanbali direction.

It is under the supervision of the Saudi Ministry of Education and aims to spread the Wahhabi teachings of Islam, implement Islamic fundamentalism and promote the Islamic awakening movement. It was founded “with the intention of renewing Islamic dogmatics ( ʿAqīda ) by calling on individuals from every Islamic country to come to Medina ( al-munawwara ), to study Islam (...) and then to theirs To return people to instruct and guide ”.

The university was founded in 1961 as a school for higher education, with an emphasis on subjects related to Islam. The Faculty of Sharia Studies was opened first.

The university has faculties for Islamic Law ( Sharia ), the “Holy Quran ” and Islamic Studies, Da'wa and Fundamentals of Religion (Uṣūl ad-Dīn), Islamic traditions ( Hadith ), Arabic language and Islamic preaching . At the university one can also acquire the academic degrees Bachelor of Arts as well as Master and Doctor . Today, training courses in computer technology, medicine, applied sciences, engineering and pharmacy are also offered.

The language of instruction is Arabic , students who do not speak the language can take part in a two-year program of the Arabic Institute. If they are successful, they can switch to university colleges and concentrate on studying Islam .
