Ismail Bhamjee

Ismail Bhamjee (born March 1, 1944 in Botswana ) is a former Botswana football and sports official and FIFA referee of Indian descent. He became world famous through a scandal during the 2006 World Cup . From 1998 to 2006 he was a member of the FIFA Executive Committee .

Live and act

In the course of his life, Bhamjee held high offices in his home country and in Africa in the fields of football and sports. His career began in 1980 at the Olympic Games in Moscow , where he refereed games as a FIFA referee. He was the first participant for Botswana in the Olympics, albeit not as an athlete.

His career as a functionary began in 1979. He was, despite his work as chief referee of the National Olympic Committee of Botswana (Botswana Olympic Committee) and remained in that post until 1988. In 1988 he was elected president of the Football Association of Botswana ( Botswana Football Association ) elected; he only had to resign in 2006 in the wake of his scandal. He was also president of COSAFA - the Council of Southern African Football Association , the football associations of Southern Africa, which came together in it. He held this office from 1988 to 2006. His highest functional position was that of FIFA Executive Committee member as a member of the Board of Directors of FIFA, where he had been the Chief Financial Officer. On his initiative the Olympic Association for Southern Africa (Southern African Olympic Comitee) was founded.

Bhamjee suffers from the autoimmune disease vitiligo . As a functionary, he determined the sporting fortunes of his country for more than twenty-five years. In 2003 he was even a candidate for the office of President of the African Football Association, but was narrowly defeated by his opponent from Cameroon . Since his resignation he has been living in seclusion in his homeland.

During the 2006 World Cup in Germany, he was relieved of his post as a senior FIFA representative and had to leave Germany. In a Frankfurt restaurant he had offered a reporter overpriced tickets, around twelve in total. They were around two hundred dollars more expensive than the fixed price. Because of his greed, he was dismissed from all offices at FIFA by FIFA President Joseph Blatter , apologized publicly, had to pay a fine of around ten thousand Swiss francs and also resigned from his national and regional offices in Africa.
