San Servolo is an uninhabited island in the Venice Lagoon, southeast of San Giorgio Maggiore . The flat island reaches a height of only one meter. The island is 380 meters long and up to 155 meters wide, with an area of five hectares , more precisely 48,442 m².

From the 8th century onwards, Benedictine monks inhabited this island for almost five hundred years , followed by nuns from the monastery of Santissimi Leone and Basso from the island of Malamocco , which had been destroyed by a storm surge . After their departure at the beginning of the 15th century, the gap was closed by a few dozen nuns who were driven from the island of Crete by the Turks . At the beginning of the 18th century, however, only a few of them could be found on San Servolo, soon after the island was earmarked for the construction of a hospital.

The relocation of the hospitals to the city of Venice in the middle of the 20th century made it necessary to change the dedication of the house. A closed psychiatric institution was established. On May 20th, 2006 the “Museo del Manicomio di San Servolo - La follia reclusa” was opened, which focuses on the segregation and stigmatization of inmates in the psychiatry of the time.

At the beginning of the 1970s, the regional government decided to move the psychiatry to the mainland because the island wanted to be used for other purposes. On October 24, 1979 the government established the “Fondazione San Servolo”, which in turn founded the “Istituto per le Ricerche e gli Studi sull'Emarginazione Sociale e Culturale” (Institute for Research into Social and Cultural Exclusion) based on the island . In 1995 the Venice International University was founded on San Servolo , a joint institution of the Universities of Venice , Barcelona , Munich and Durham .

Furthermore, the “European Center Venice for the Professions in Monument Preservation” ( Centro Europeo di Venezia per i Mestieri della Conservazione del Patrimonio Architettonico ) was established there in 1977 as the executive body of a foundation established by the Council of Europe , the European Community , the European Parliament , the UNESCO and national associations and ministries was established. The aim of the center is to organize training courses for craftsmen who are active in the preservation of monuments or who want to become. Over the years, the Centre's educational activity has increasingly focused on two additional objectives: specialization in traditional restoration techniques, but also modern construction techniques, and the use of traditional and innovative techniques for regular maintenance and sustainable conservation. For this reason, the courses are not aimed exclusively at craftsmen, but also at architects, technicians and entrepreneurs. The center has not been on the island of San Servolo since 2007 , but is now based in Thiene (Veneto) .
