The “Istrian Ypsilon” as a road map

The Istrian Ypsilon ( Croatian Istarski ipsilon ) is the name given to the system of expressways on the Croatian part of the Istrian peninsula . The system consists of two expressways that join at Kanfanar . This creates a Y- shape on the map . The expressways on the Istrian peninsula are managed by the private operating company Bina-Istra .

The Istrian Ypsilon includes the following expressways:

The A9 runs from the Slovenian border in the north via Umag and Poreč to Pula, which is close to the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula. The A8 runs in a west-east direction from the A9 to Rijeka. The intersection of both connections is at Kanfanar, so the map shows the shape of a Y-symbol .

On the A9 between Umag and Kanfanar, the expansion to a continuous four-lane route was completed on June 13, 2011. Exceptions to this are the toll bridge Mirna and the Limska Draga viaduct . The A9 between Kanfanar and Pula has been expanded to four lanes. The A8 between Kanfanar and Matulji runs through a more topographically demanding area than the A9, including the Učka tunnel .
