István Hahn

István Hahn (born on March 28, 1913 in Budapest ; died on July 26, 1984 there ) was a Hungarian ancient historian and member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences .

Life

Hahn graduated from the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest in 1935 to become a secondary school teacher in Latin, Greek and history , and received his doctorate. His dissertation topic was " The creation of the world in the Islamic legends ". In 1937 he passed his rabbi exam at the Rabbinical Seminary in Budapest. From 1937 to 1942 he worked as a teacher at the educational institute of the Israelite community in Pest . In 1941 he became a teacher at the rabbinical seminary, where he taught Jewish philosophy. During this time Hahn researched and published on the relationship between the religions of antiquity, especially between Judaism and Greek and Roman antiquity.

In 1948 Hahn was appointed rector of the Ignác Goldziher grammar school in the Józsefváros district of Budapest . From 1949 to 1951 he was then deputy rector of the Fazekas-Gimnázium . From 1951 he was briefly a teacher at the vocational school Zalka Máté before he became deputy rector of the teachers' college in Budapest in 1952, which is now part of the West Hungarian University . From 1955 to 1957 he was head of the history department there. In 1953 he successfully completed his Russian studies at his old alma mater .

In 1957 Hahn became a research assistant at the Faculty of Greco-Roman History at Eötvös Loránd University, in 1959 he became a private lecturer and in 1963 a full professor. In 1983 he retired. At the same time he headed the Faculty of History at the University of Science in Szeged from 1959 to 1962 . He taught history of the ancient Orient, ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire. Hahn dealt intensively with the history of religions, with ancient urban culture and the polis , military science, the Mycenaean culture and the democracy of Athens . He also dealt intensively with Greek and Roman mythology . To better understand the nature of the ancient empires, he examined the writings of ancient historians such as Herodotus , Thucydides, and Appian .

In 1979 he became a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and in 1982 a full member.

The urn containing Hahn's remains was buried in the Farkasréti cemetery.

  • In 2013 the “Non Omnis Moriar” foundation organized a two-day conference in honor of Hahn's 100th birthday.
