István Pásztor (cyclist)

István Pásztor (born January 2, 1926 in Rákospalota - Budapest , † January 2, 2015 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian cyclist and later a cycling coach. The ten-time Hungarian national champion took part in the team pursuit of the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki .

life and career

István Pásztor started cycling at a young age. In national championships Pásztor achieved many top placings, including first place in the 1000-meter time trial in 1949 and second place in the individual and team pursuit in his hometown. Also in 1954 he was in action at the Millenáris Velodrome in Budapest in the single pursuit, with the Austrian Franz Wimmer winning with a time of 5: 13.1 minutes and István Pásztor finishing third.

In addition, the ten-time Hungarian national champion took part in the team pursuit at the 1952 Summer Olympics together with his compatriots Imre Furmen , István Lang and István Schillerwein , whereby the Hungarians took tenth place and thus barely failed to qualify for the quarter-finals. He won his championship titles in the single pursuit, in the team pursuit, in the 1000-meter time trial and as a stayer .

Furthermore, the athlete from Honvéd Budapest took part in the UCI Track World Championships in 1953 , where he was tenth in the single pursuit with a time of 5: 23.6 minutes. Further placements at the UCI Track World Championships were 16th in 1957 with a time of 5: 17.8 minutes and 22nd in 1958 with a time of 5: 24.0 minutes .

His personal best in the team pursuit is 4: 48.20 minutes; He set this record on August 5, 1954 together with Imre Furmen, János Bascsák and István Schillerwein. Around three years later, he achieved an improved time of 4: 44.8 minutes with Richard Bicskey , Imre Furmen and János Söre . After ending his active career at the end of the 1950s, he then mainly worked as a cycling trainer and was part of the coaching staff for the Hungarian cycling team at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich . His main field of activity was the road driver , especially the 100-kilometer team time trial . Then he held other higher offices. On his 89th birthday, Pásztor died in St. Imre Teaching Hospital in his hometown of Budapest.
