action

An old man lives on a houseboat with his old dog, his even older cat and his extremely old goldfish. They can no longer manage the household and so the old man sends a newspaper advertisement to look for domestic help. A short time later there is a knock on the door and Cuthbert Q. Divine stands in front of it. He's a wolf, but pretends to be a wolfhound in front of the old man. He becomes the pearl of the family, cleans the accommodation, repaints the walls and even makes the old houseboat afloat again, so that all trips can be made in front of the New York City skyline . Dog, cat, fish and the old man feel rejuvenated and enjoy their lives.

One day the man reads in the newspaper that Cuthbert Q. Divine is wanted for fraud. It also says that he is really a wolf. The old man is disappointed and the wolf finally admits that he used to be a member of a wolf motorcycle gang because he was the only wolf with a motorcycle and finally collapses full of self-reproach. He has to stay in bed for a long time and the man and his animals run the household more badly than rightly. When Cuthbert has recovered, the old man advises him to face the police. Cuthbert is arrested. In court, the old man and the animals tell of Cuthbert's great willingness to help and his good deeds, and the judge finally acquits Cuthbert. He still lives on the houseboat with the old man and the animals.
