Italo Zilioli

Italo Zilioli (born September 24, 1941 in Turin , Italy ) is a former Italian cyclist .

Athletic career

After he was able to become Italian junior champion in individual road driving in 1959, there were no great successes with the amateurs. In 1962 he switched to the professional camp and was able to achieve 6 victories in the following year. At the Giro d`Italia in 1964, 1965 and 1966, Zilioli achieved his best results when he was second in the overall standings. In 1969 it ranked 3rd and shone in 1965, 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1972 with one stage win each.

The Northern Italian competed three times in the Tour de France: in 1970 he won a stage and finished in 13th place, while he had to retire early in 1968 and 1972. Zilioli was a temporary team-mate of Felice Gimondi (1967), Franco Bitossi (1968/69), Eddy Merckx (1970) and Gösta Pettersson (1971). In the 15 years as a professional driver, Zilioli celebrated 55 victories and numerous other successes. He won the Italian one-day races Giro dell'Emilia , Giro dell Piemont , Giro dell Ticino, Giro dell'Appennino , Giro dell Campania and Giro dell Veneto. In 1966 he was also able to win the championship in Zurich . In 1976, at the age of 35, he ended his active career as a professional. He has achieved a total of 53 victories as a professional driver.
