Since the first year in high school is Kotoko Aihara ( 相原琴子 , Aihara Kotoko ) in Naoki Irie ( 入江直樹 , Irie Naoki ) love the twisted her with his speech at the enrollment head. On the spur of the moment she tries as one of the worst students - she is in class F, which is the worst grade at a high school - to hand him a love letter, which he, however, mercilessly and cold-heartedly refuses in the presence of many classmates. Kotoko wanted to break off their attempt at conquest at this point. However, when the poorly built house of Kotoko and her father Shigeo Aihara ( 相 原 重 雄 , Aihara Shigeo ) is destroyed in a light earthquake, they both move into the Irie's house , as the fathers of Kotoko and Naoki have been close friends since they were at school are.

Within the household it turns out again and again that Kotoko, unlike Naoki and his younger brother Yūki Irie ( 入 江 裕 樹 , Irie Yūki ) is not a genius and is therefore rejected and humiliated by both. Nevertheless, Kotoko finds support in the form of Naoki's mother, Machiko Irie, who oversees everything ( 入 江 紀 子 , Irie Machiko , named Noriko in the anime ). She goes to great lengths to couple the two together, which repeatedly leads to embarrassing or overzealous actions. So she makes every possible effort to leave a good impression on Naoki, which usually ends in a situation in which she has to rely on his help. Although Naoki appears to have a cold heart, in the seventh edition of the manga, he shows his affection for her in the form of a kiss while she sleeps. Yet he does not admit this to either Kotoko or anyone else.

The situation comes to a head when Kotoko receives an offer to marry her old classmate Kinnosuke Ikezawa ( 池 澤 金 之 助 , Ikezawa Kinnosuke ). This is the first moment when the otherwise always cool Naoki rushes into the rainy night to keep Kotoko away. In an emotional conversation with Kotoko, he confesses that she should only love him. To the shock of the whole family, he announced that he wanted to marry her that evening. Meanwhile, a one-sided relationship develops between the rich exchange student Chris ( 克莉斯 ) and Kinnosuke, who is still in love with Kotoko. Originally, Chris was supposed to be married to Naoki (in the anime, in the manga this was Sasuiko ), but he turned down this offer. Ultimately, Chris succeeds in winning over her lover with the support of Kotoko.

Together they both embark on a medical path. So Kotoko decides to train as a nurse and Naoki starts his studies as a doctor. During this time and also shortly after their wedding, their love is repeatedly put to the test, as the cool nature of Naoki on Kotoko always gives the appearance of a lack of love. Nevertheless, the two stay together and Kotoko understands her husband's feelings better and better. So both have a child named Kotomi together, while Chris and Kinnosuke are blessed with three.
