The Itumbiara Reservoir is located on the Rio Paranaíba between the districts or cities of Itumbiara in Goiás and Tupaciguara in Minas Gerais in Brazil , about 800 km northwest of Rio de Janeiro and 300 km south of Brasília . The Brazilian names of the dam are: "Barragem Itumbiara", "Lago de Itumbiara", "Represa de Itumbiara", also "Lago das Brisas".
The sixth largest hydropower plant in Brazil is operated at the dam . The dam was built to generate electricity from hydropower , but the reservoir is now also used for tourism, water sports, fishing and other purposes.
In addition to the Rio Paranaíba, the right source river of the Río Paraná , the Rio Corumbá and the Rio Araguari are other tributaries to the reservoir. The barrier structure is a combination of a dam made of earth and a gravity dam . Its maximum height is 106 meters and the length of the structure is 6780 meters.
