Iulius Sabinus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iulius Sabinus (probably Gaius Iulius Sabinus ; † probably 79 in Rome ) was a Roman counter-emperor in Gaul during the reign of Emperor Vespasian in 70. He came from a noble Lingon family and presented himself as the (illegitimate) great-grandson of Caesar .

Life

In 69, after the death of Emperor Nero, Iulius Civilis instigated an uprising of the Germanic tribes on the left bank of the Rhine against Rome. The aim was supposedly an empire independent of Rome. Gradually, more and more tribes - also in Gaul - joined the revolt, including the Treveri tribe under Iulius Classicus and the Lingons under Iulius Sabinus.

The former supporters of the murdered Vitellius refused to follow his successor Vespasian. The insurgents achieved their first success in January 1970 when they defeated two Roman legions. Iulius Sabinus proclaimed himself emperor and declared Augusta Treverorum (Trier) his residence. After the end of the turmoil in the four-emperor year , Vespasian brought the lost territories back under control of the empire through troops under General Quintus Petilius Cerialis .

Sabinus had already gone into hiding after a defeat against the Sequaner, allied with Vespasian . According to a legendary report by Plutarch , Sabinus is said to have hid in an underground vault for nine years. In the year 79 he was discovered, taken to Rome with his wife Empona (in Tacitus: Epponina ) in the hope of a pardon and executed.
