Iván Abreu Camacho (born September 10, 1968 in Havana , outside of Cuba often referred to as Ivan Camacho ) is a Cuban boxer.

Amateur career

He started boxing as a teenager in Havana . In 1988 and 1991 he was third in the middleweight division of the Cuban Championships. However, it was rarely enough to jump into the first national team and thus to international success. He failed several times against the local boxing greats and amateur champions such as Orestes Solano, Ramón Garbey or Ángel Espinosa .

During a European tour of the Cuban boxing relay, Abreu sat down in 1992 and initially stayed in Denmark , where he played some amateur fights. There he won u. a. also the traditional “Copenhagen Cup” with final victories over Sven Ottke and Marco Theuer . Especially the dramatic final battle against Marco Theuer caused a stir. This fight was awarded as the best tournament fight and Abreu received a professional offer from boxing promoter Mogens Palle.

Professional career

As a professional boxer , Abreu initially had few problems with his opponents in the ring and was built up accordingly quickly. As early as 1996 he played his first championship fight for the IBF intercontinental title in the super middleweight division. His opponent was Salvatore Di Salvatore . In the second round there was a scandal when Abreu threw his opponent onto the boards with a blow to the neck. Di Salvatore reported his alleged incapacity to fight. The jury then disqualified the Cuban, who lost his temper and kicked Di Salvatore. Because of this unsportsmanlike behavior, Abreu was banned for one year. His comeback after the suspension began with a defeat, but only wins followed, including 1998 even against former world champion Steve Little . In 1999 he played his last fight, in which he knocked out the American John Kiser in Copenhagen in the first round. With the exception of his first two skirmishes in South Florida, he had fought all of his fights in Denmark.

Criminal offenses

Abreu was arrested for rape of a 39-year-old in August 2001 and sentenced to 15 months in prison the following February. In 2003 he participated in an armed robbery, for which he was sentenced in February 2005 to an eight-year prison term and shortly thereafter deported from Denmark to Cuba.
