Ivan Triesault ( Estonian Juhan Treisalt ; born July 1 . Jul / 13. July  1898 greg. In Tallinn , Russian Empire , Governorate of Estonia ; † 3. January 1980 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor of Estonian origin.

life and career

Triesault was born in Reval, today's Estonian capital Tallinn . Triesault had his first stage appearance at the age of 14 at the German Theater in Reval. When he was 18 years old, he moved to the United States and began training in dance and acting. As a dancer he worked for a long time at the Radio City Music Hall . After briefly appearing on Broadway , he turned to the medium of film in the early 1940s. He made his film debut in 1943 with a small supporting role in Ambassador to Moscow .

Triesault quickly established himself as a supporting actor and often played the role of the rogue, threatening or mysterious foreigner. In Alfred Hitchcock's classic film Notorious , for example, he played the cold-blooded Nazi agent Eric Mathis . Triesault had one of his few sympathetic roles as Pastor Martin Niemöller in the anti-Nazi propaganda film The Hitler Gang . His other films include The Case of Cicero , The Journey to the Center of the Earth , The Lion of Sparta and Colonel of Ryan's Express . In total, he was seen in more than 120 film and television productions, most recently in 1969.

He died of heart failure on January 3, 1980 at the age of 81 .
