Ivars Cinkuss (born July 15, 1969 in Riga ) is a Latvian conductor , singer and music teacher . Since 1996 he has been the director of the male choir of the Riga Technical University "Gaudeamus" and since 2003 one of the chief conductors of the Latvian Song Festival .

Life

Activity as a conductor

Ivars Cinkuss received his musical training in the choir class of the Emīls Dārziņš Music School (graduated in 1987), at the Latvian Music Academy Jāzeps Vītols (graduated in 1992) and at Westminster Choir College in Princeton (class of Joseph Flummerfelt , graduated in 1995).

His activity as a conductor has taken Cinkuss to many European countries, to the USA, Australia, South Africa and China, often with the male choir "Gaudeamus". He has made guest appearances at the Wiener Musikverein , the Concert Hall of the Forbidden City in Beijing , the Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto , Notre Dame de Paris , the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC and the Haydn Hall in Schloss Esterházy in Eisenstadt. In addition to the male choir “Gaudeamus”, Cinkuss has directed the mixed choir “Cantus Fortis” since 2007. Since 2003 he has been one of the chief conductors of the Latvian Song Festival , which is recognized by UNESCO as part of the intangible world cultural heritage . In this context, Cinkuss is also responsible for the choirs of the North Vidzeme region and the male choirs of the city of Riga. Together with Aira Birziņa , Cinkuss was the musical director of the final concert of the 25th Latvian Song Festival in 2013.

As a conductor, Cinkuss has worked with the Latvija State Choir, the Latvian Radio Choir, the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, the Collegium Musicum Rīga, the Rīgas kamermūziķi chamber orchestra and the Latvian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra.

Significant conductors:

In 2006 Cinkuss received awards from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia and the City of Riga for his services to Latvian choral art - especially for his interpretation of Henry Purcell's opera “ Dido and Aeneas ” and for his support for the choral movement.

Other musical activities

Cinkuss worked as a voice teacher at the Riga Cathedral Choir School (1995–1998), the Ventspils Music School and as a private teacher. As part of master classes and seminars in Latvia, Germany, England, Sweden, the USA, Canada, Australia and Luxembourg, Cinkuss has taught voice training and choral conducting as well as giving introductions to Latvian cultural and musical history. As a juror, Cinkuss has participated in numerous international choir competitions.

In addition to his work as a conductor, Cinkuss takes on baritone solo parts of very different musical characters, with a focus on the baroque and contemporary Latvian chamber music. Since 2008 he has been part of the ethnofolk trio "Šmite Kārkle Cinkuss", with whom he has performed in different countries in Europe, in the USA, Canada and Australia. In Luxembourg he is particularly valued for his interpretation of Uģis Prauliņš ' “Veltījums” and Eric Clapton'sWonderful Tonight ”.

As an actor and singer, Cinkuss has worked in a number of musical, opera and drama productions as well as in the film Ķīlnieks by Laila Pakalniņa, in which he plays himself. His final roles include:
