Ivars Sīlis

Ivars Sīlis (born December 1, 1940 in Riga ) is a Latvian - Greenlandic photographer , writer , film producer and honorary consul .

Life

Ivars Sīlis is the son of Jānis Sīlis (1908–?) And Hermīne Tatjana Bremze Greitāne (1920–2015). In 1944 he fled to Copenhagen with his mother and little brother . In 1964 he completed his training at Denmark's engineering academy and then worked for three years as a geophysicist in Greenland. He later participated in several expeditions to Greenland, Canada and Svalbard .

On June 19, 1976 he married the Greenlandic artist Aka Høegh (* 1947). The two children Inuk Silis-Høegh (* 1972) and Bolatta Silis-Høegh (* 1981) emerged from the marriage, both of whom work as artists, filmmakers and writers.

He published numerous books, some fiction and some photo series, which he also published in Greenlandic, English and Latvian. His photo exhibitions have been shown worldwide. In 1994 he published his first documentary Vor enestående tid (Frozen Annals) on environmental research, which was awarded by the United Nations . His film Andala og Sofiannguaq was recognized as the best documentary film at the 2002 Odense International Film Festival . Ivars Sīlis has been the Latvian Honorary Consul in Greenland since 2010.
