Life

childhood

Ivica Todorić was born in Zagreb in 1951. He spent his childhood on a farm in Bozjakovina. Only after starting school did he return to Zagreb, where he later studied and graduated from the Faculty of Economics.

family

Today he lives in Zagreb with his wife Vesna and their three children - Iva, Ante and Ivana. His wife and children also have a degree in economics and work within the Agrokor group.

His father Ante Todorić was a director of the Agrokombinat company and a businessman. In 1971, in the wake of the Croatian Spring , he was deposed and charged with misappropriating six million Deutschmarks (three million euros), which he allegedly gave to Matica hrvatska to buy weapons, and in 1973 was sentenced to 13 years in prison. He spent four and a half years in prison in Nova Gradiška .

Career

After Todorić finished his studies in economics, the family started growing flowers and went into retail in 1976. After just a few years, the Todorić family achieved a market share of 40% in the flower trade in ex-Yugoslavia . The family was also active in the fruit and vegetable trade. Due to its investments in manufacturing and distribution, Agrokor became one of the leading conglomerates in the region in the 1980s and the market leader in the flower trade. In 1989 Agrokor was registered as a joint stock company and Ivica Todorić became its 100% owner.

In 1992, after the fall of Yugoslavia , Todorić expanded its business and acquired the Jamnica company and, a year later, the Zvijezda company, which produces mayonnaise, oil and butter. In 1994 Agrokor continued to expand, when Todorić acquired the companies "Ledo" (ice cream), "Unikonzum", "Bobis", the silo "Mlinove Vinkovci ", a salt works on Pag , and the Hotel Opera (formerly Inter-Continental) founded the “Credit Bank Zagreb”. In 2005, "PIK Vrbovec", the largest meat processing company in Croatia, was bought and "Belje", the largest supplier of agricultural products, was acquired. In the following years, various companies in the food production and marketing sector in Hungary , Serbia , Bosnia-Herzegovina and Slovenia were acquired with the aim of becoming the market leader in Southeast Europe.

All investments are combined in the Agrokor Group , in which Ivica Todorić holds 91.67% and the EBRD 8.33%.

The purchase of the Slovenian supermarket chain Mercator in 2013 caused financial difficulties for Agrokor, and in 2017 the state had to intervene due to the threat of bankruptcy.

Scandals

In 1992 the “Kreditbank Zagreb” paid six million Deutschmarks to “Agrokor” for the purchase of corn and wheat from Osijek and Kutjevo , which were intended as state supplies. Todorić had previously exported this wheat, sold the foreign exchange to "Ina", a Croatian mineral oil and gas company, and subsequently filled the state supplies, partly with wheat from Serbia. In the same year the “credit bank Zagreb” granted Todorić a loan of 80 million D-Marks for the purchase of corn. It was later learned that he did not use DM 48 million of this sum to buy corn. Todorić surprisingly escaped prosecution by the judiciary as the bank immediately accepted a statement he had submitted for the use of the money.

The Kulmer Castle

In 1999 Todorić bought 7,000 square meters of land near Šestine in the Podsljeme district of Zagreb . This property comprises three buildings of the Kulmer Castle and a wine cellar. The castle was faithfully renovated for around 2.7 million euros, which turned out to be problematic as the last photo of the castle after a fire was taken before the Second World War . Todorić added an underground swimming pool and sauna to the castle.
