Iwama ( Japanese 岩 間 町 , - machi ) was a community 100 kilometers northeast of Tokyo . It lay near the town of Mito , in the prefecture of Ibaraki in Japan .

history

On March 19, 2006, Iwama merged with the city of Tomobe to form the new city of Kasama .

particularities

In 1942, Ueshiba Morihei , the founder of Aikidō , retired in this area and moved to Iwama, where he built a Dōjō and an Aiki shrine (Aiki-Jinja). The present dojo was completed in 1945 before the end of World War II. Here he developed his Aikidō, which he later called Takemusu Aiki. From 1946 he was accompanied by his student Morihiro Saitō until his death. Saitō took over the management of the Iwama-Dōjō after the death of the founder. He founded the Iwama Ryu ("Iwama style"), which should preserve Ueshiba's techniques in their originality. After his death, the management of the Dōjō in Iwama went back to the Aikikai Honbu Dōjō in Tokyo.
