Ivan Fomin ( Russian Иван Александрович Фомин ., Scientific transliteration Ivan Aleksandrovich Fomin * January 22 . Jul / 3. February  1872 greg. In Orel , †  12. June 1936 in Moscow ) was a Russian - Soviet architect .

Life

Iwan Fomin studied architecture and etching at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1894 to 1897 and from 1905 to 1909. After he was expelled from the academy in 1897 for participating in a student revolt, he worked in Moscow as an assistant to the architects Lev Kekuschew and Fyodor Schechtel .

In his early phase he was influenced by Art Nouveau . At the beginning of the 20th century, Fomin became increasingly concerned with the architectural heritage of Russia and became an advocate of Russian classicism . In 1911 he organized the "Historical Architecture Exhibition" in Saint Petersburg.

Iwan Fomin is considered to be the founder of neoclassicism in Russian architecture . He sought the connection of the classical with the modern architecture and propagated the creation of a "proletarian classical", which later found its climax in the socialist classicism . In the 1910s he worked on several urban development projects , which, however, were not realized. 1920-23 he worked on the planning of the development and greening of the Petrograd Field of Mars . In 1919 he was chairman of the architecture office at the Petrograd Planning Authority. In the 1930s he taught at the Leningrad Academy of Arts and from 1933 was head of the Mossoviet's architecture school . His students included Alexandr Gegello , Yevgeny Lewinson , WO Munz and Noi Trotsky . In the 1930s Fomin was one of the most important architects of socialist classicism .
