Ivan Sakharov

Ivan Petrovich Sakharov ( Russian Иван Петрович Сахаров ;. Scientific transliteration Ivan Petrovich Sakharov ; born August 29, jul. / 10. September  1807 greg. In Tula ; † August 24 jul. / 5. September  1863 greg. In Saretschje, province Novgorod ) was a Russian ethnographer, archaeologist, and folklorist.

Life

Sakharov was the son of a priest and initially studied at the spiritual seminary in his hometown. After graduating in 1830, he went to Moscow , where he completed a medical degree at Lomonosov University five years later . From 1836 Sakharov worked as a doctor in Saint Petersburg . At the same time, he dealt with the research and documentation of Russian folklore , including folk songs, fairy tales and legends as well as customs. Building on his research, for which he made several trips to the central Russian provinces, Sakharov published, among other things, a collection of Russian folk songs (1838–39) and a collection of fairy tales of the Russian people (Russian Russkije narodnyje skaski ( Русские народные сказки ), 1841 . In 1841, Sakharov was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus 3rd degree for his ethnographic activities . From 1848 he was a member of the Imperial Archaeological Society.

Sakharov spent the last years of his life on his Zarechye estate in Ujesd Waldai , where he succumbed to a brain disease in 1863 after suffering for a long time.
