Utrobin, who started for Trud Moscow, had his first international success at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane in 1962 . There he won the bronze medal with the relay. The following year he was third in the Svenska Skidspelen with the relay and third in the 15 km run at the Lahti Ski Games . At the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1964 , he again won bronze with the relay. He also achieved 17th place over 30 km there. In 1965 he came second in the Lahti Ski Games over 15 km. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1966he finished fifth with the season. At Soviet championships he won four times over 50 km (1961, 1963, 1965, 1966), three times over 30 km (1960, 1962, 1965), three times over 70 km (1965, 1967, 1968) and once with the relay (1962 ) and over 15 km (1966).
