Life
Kmetty received his education at small private art schools in Košice , and later in Budapest , where he also attended Károly Ferenczy's evening school . The orderly and structured style of composition typical of him developed around this time until around 1910.
János Kmetty went on two study trips to Paris . At the first he enrolled briefly at the Académie Julian in 1911 and during this time Paul Cézanne had a strong impact. After his return from Paris he became a member of a left-wing political group around Lajos Kassák , which tried to enlighten and change people through art. The short-lived Hungarian Socialist Soviet Republic (1919) awakened a creative enthusiasm and radicalism in him, which he shared with other young artists from Košice, Cluj and Nagybánya ( Frauenbach ). In 1927 he made his second trip to Paris and after his return he became active a second time in the life of the left avant-garde .
In 1930 he moved to Szentendre , where he became a member of a local art colony. From 1946 on he taught at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts . Kmetty died in Budapest in 1975 at the age of 85. He wrote a detailed autobiography from 1922 to 1972.
