János Vargha

János Vargha (* 1949 ) is a Hungarian environmental activist and biologist . He was very committed to the construction of a dam in the Danube near Nagymaros .

Life

János Vargha was born in 1949. In 1977 he graduated from the József Attila University in Szeged with a degree in biology . Since 1981 he has campaigned against the planned Danube dam near Nagymaros through campaigns and publications. In 1984 he founded " Duna Kör " ( Danube District ) as one of the first environmental groups in the Eastern Bloc. You managed to prevent the expansion of the dam in Gabčíkovo in Slovakia .

In 1985 he and the group received the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize). In 1988 he held an international conference on dam projects with the support of the World Wildlife Fund . A demonstration with 40,000 participants against the construction of the dam took place in front of the parliament building in Budapest. In October 1988, 150,000 people had signed a petition. In 1989 the Hungarian government stopped construction.

In 1990 János Vargha received the Goldman Environmental Prize . From 1998 to 2000 he was the chief environmental advisor to the Hungarian government.
