Jozef Jankowski

Józef Jankowski (born November 17, 1910 in Czyczkowo , Kashubia ; † October 16, 1941 in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp ) was a Polish Pallottine priest and beatified martyr in World War II .

He was ordained a priest in 1936. After completing his philosophical-theological studies at the Pallottine Seminary in Ołtarzew near Ożarów Mazowiecki , he became prefect of schools in Ołtarzew and the surrounding area. In September 1939 he became secretary of a children's aid committee and pastor for soldiers and civilians. In May 1941 he was arrested by the Gestapo and after two weeks in Warsaw's Pawiak prison he was “transferred” to the Auschwitz camp (with the same transport as Maximilian Kolbe ). In Auschwitz, Józef Jankowski succumbed to the camp conditions and special tortures.

Pope John Paul II beatified Jankowski as one of 108 martyrs of the Second World War on June 13, 1999 in Warsaw, together with a second Pallottine, Priest Józef Stanek .

Józef Jankowski is the patron saint of the city and Gmina Brusy as well as Ożarów Mazowiecki and the Laski dean's office .

The primary school in Czyczkowo in Kashubia is named after him.
